Enable SSH on GoDaddy Shared Hosting

In this article, we will learn How to enable SSH on GoDaddy Shared Hosting?

Enable SSH

To enable SSH, we need to open the GoDaddy control panel. Under the security section, we have an option for SSH. Click on the SSH. It will open a new dialog. Click on the Enable button. Once you clicked on the Enable button, you will be redirected to “SSH Access” page.

Generate SSH Key

To connect with our GoDaddy server using SSH, we need to use the public and the private key. We will generate public and private. To generate the new set of public and private key click on “Manage SSH Keys” button.

On the next page, we need to click on the “Generate a New Key”. If you already have public and the private key, you can use it. For this article, we will create one. Click on the “Generate a New Key” button.

On “Generating a Public Key” page provide the following information to generate a new key.
Key Name: Provide your key name. Example, mykey.
Key Password: Enter your key password.
Reenter Password: Confirm your key password.
Strength: Check the password strength.
Key Type: We selected RSA out of (RSA and DSA)
Key Size: We selected 2048 out of (1024, 2048, and 4096)

Once done, click on the Generate button. It will generate the public and the private key. Next, we need to download private key. We will convert it into PPK format. It is supported by putty. To download the key file, first, open the “Manage SSH Keys” page. On “Manage SSH Keys” page, we need to click on download option available in front of private keys.

Here we need to provide the same password which we used at the time of generating the key. Without proper password, we will not able to generate the PPK file. Enter the password and generate and download the file.

We will use it with putty to connect with go daddy shared hosting.
Next, we need to open putty. If you need to download putty, you can click on this URL. It will redirect you to the putty download page.

Launch Putty, with putty we need to use the server IP and the cPanel username. You find both of these at the cPanel information page. Note down the server IP and the cPanel username.

First, we need to enter our server IP and our new session name. Server IP is to connect our GoDaddy shared hosting server and Session name is to save the current session settings.

Following images show all the above steps.

Server refused our key

We successfully connected with our GoDaddy shared hosting server. If you noticed, we have a message about “Server refused our key”. To fix it, we need to open the Manage SSH key page. Next, click on the Manage button in front of the public key.

On the next page, we need to click on the Authorize button.

After this try to open SSH connection in putty one more time. For the password use your cPanel password.
