In this article, we will learn How to download and install XAMPP on Windows Server 2016. Before starting following are the key points which we will cover in this article.

  1. Download the latest version of XAMPP.
  2. Install XAMPP on Windows Server 2016.
  3. Launch XAMPP Control Panel.
  4. Testing.

Note: If you did not disable the internet explorer enhance security mode please disable it temporarily. After downloading the XAMPP installer, we can enable it again. You can check this article to disable the internet enhance security mode.

Step 1: Download XAMPP Windows version.

To download the XAMPP, please visit the following website.

Click on the above URL it will redirect you to the Apache download page. Download the XAMPP version which you want to install. We are interested in 7.3.0 version. Click on the appropriate button to download. For us, the XAMPP installer size for Windows is around 124 MB.

After clicking on the Download button, it will redirect us to the confirmation page. If a download is not started automatically yet, you can click on the click here link.

For us, it is started, and we saved it in the Download folder.

Step 2: Install XAMPP for Windows Server 2016

Open the download location and double click on the XAMPP installer to launch it.

If you see windows security dialog for the installer, click on the run button. At the time of writing this article, we publisher is BitRock Inc.

After this, you may see the XAMPP installer user account controller warning dialog. Click on the “Ok” button to continue. After this, you can see following installation wizard screens.

1: Setup XAMPP: XAMPP Installer welcome window. We don’t need to do anything here. Click on the “Next” button to open next installation wizard window.

2: Select Components: On the next window we need to select the components we need to install. We need everything, for use we selected everything. Select the component as per your requirement. At the time of writing this article, the following are the different options are available

  1. Server
    1. Apache: It is a web server to handle all the web requests.
    2. MySQL: We need it to store our website data. You are planning to use any other database server, you may skip it.
    3. FileZilla FTP Server: If you want to allow FTP connection to your Windows Server you can install it.
    4. Mercury Mail Server: If you want mail servers you can use it.
    5. Tomcat:

    1. PHP: We will use the PHP programming language for creating our website. If you are interested to use any other programing language, you can use.
    2. Perl`
  3. Program Language: I don’t think so the following options for the programming language.
    1. phpMyAdmin: It is a web-based user interface to maintain our MySQL database. If you don’t want it, you can ignore it. You can run your server without it.
    2. Webalizer: It is a web-based log analysis tool.
    3. Fake Sendmail:

Once you are done with the component selection, click on the “Next” button top open next window.

3: Installation Location: Next we select the installation location. I am fine with the default the location. Select the installation location and then click on the next button.

Note: If you change the default XAMPP installation location you may require reconfiguring few configuration files.

4: Bitnami: The next window is about bitnami. If you want to learn more about it, you can use the checkbox. It will launch the bitnami website once the installation will be completed. We are not interested in it, so for use unchecked the checkbox. Finally, click on the next button to open the next window.

5: Ready to Install: We are almost done with the installation wizard. This is the summary window. You need to click on the “Next” button to start the actual installation based on the selected options in the previous windows. If you want to change anything click on the back button to change the respective option. Once you are comfortable with the installation options click on the next button. It will start the installation for the XAMPP on your Windows Machine or Windows Server 2016.

6: Installation Progress: Wait for the installation to complete. Once the installation is completed, you can then see the Installation wizard final window.

7: Completed: We are done with the XAMPP installation on Windows Server 2016. To close the installation wizard, click on the finish button. On this window, we also have an option to launch the XAMPP control panel. If you want to launch it check the checkbox and then click on the finish button. If you don’t want to launch the XAMPP control panel, you can uncheck the checkbox and click on the finish button to close the installation wizard. Window. You can find the XAMPP Control Panel in the XAMPP installation directory. For us, we need to launch the control panel, so we selected it and then we click on the Finish button.

6: Installation Progress: Wait for the installation to complete. Once the installation is completed, you can then see the Installation wizard final window.

Step 3: Launch XAMPP services

Open the XAMPP control panel. You can find it in the XAMPP installation directory. For us, it is available at C:\xampp\xampp-control.exe. Launch it. Next, at the first launch, you need to select the appropriate country flag. We selected the first option. After selecting the flag, it will redirect us to the XAMPP Control panel. From here we can start and stop the available services. For example, for this article, we only started the Apache and the MySQL Services.

Step 4: Testing

Once the XAMPP services or (Apache and other) are started successfully we can visit, our server with the server IP address. If for windows server, we have appropriate firewall rules then we can see the XAMPP default dashboard page.
