In this article, we will learn How to enable SSH access to MilesWeb.com shared hosting?
By default, MilesWeb blocks the SSH access. You need to drop a mail to the MilesWeb support team or create a support ticket to enable the SSH access. In response, you will receive a port number. We will need to use the port number later in the article. After this, follow the below steps.
To enable SSH access, we need to open the control panel. You can find the SSH Access under the security section. Click on it. It will open a new page.
On the next page, we need to click on the “Manage SSH Keys” button.
After this, we need to generate a new key. If you already have one, feel free to use the same. For me, I need to create a new key. To generate a new key, click on the “Generate a New Key” button.
On the next page, we need to provide the following information
Key Name: Your new key name.
Key Password: Enter the password.
Reenter Password: Confirm your key password.
Strength: Password strength indicator. It is good to use a strong password.
Key Type: RSA
Key Size: 2048
Next, we need to download the private key. We will use it with Putty to connect our MilesWeb shared hosting. For windows we have Putty. You can use any other SSH client. To download the key, we need to click on the download link. On the next page, we need to enter the key password. If the password is correct (which we used at the time of creating the key) control panel will generate a new PPK file. We need to use the PPK file with putty. Save the PPK file.
Next, we need to open Manage SSH keys page. Click on the Manage link in front of the Public key which we created above. On the next page, we need to click on the “Authorize” button.
To use the PPK file with Putty, we need to note down the IP, Username and the password. You can find the username on the control panel home page. And the server IP is available at the server information page.
After collecting all the information, we need to use it with Putty. Launch Putty. If you have any other SSH client, feel free to use the same. Launch Putty. For the current session, we need to provide the Hostname or IP, and port number provided by the MilesWeb support team. Connection type SSH. Provide a Saved Session name.
Next, we need to use the SSH key. For this open Auth, available under Connection -> SSH -> Auth. On the Auth page, we need to select the PPK file.
Again, open the session page and save the current session. Finally, click on the "open" button to open the session. After this, we need to provide the login name and the password. Use the password which we used at the time of generating the key. Following is the image for the few commands which we executed.
We are done with SSH access. In the next article, we will learn How to use SSH?
