In this tutorial we are going to talk about use of gradient and basic shapes in logo designing. We’ll use a rectangle as our base and add two more rectangles to create our basic shape for the logo. Generally, gradients are often a challenge for some, but with a little insight into a variety of palettes, you'll find it a lot easier than you think. I have used a dark background color to enhance the logo and the colors of logo to look brighter and more vibrant. You may find additional inspiration by searching on Vlemonn.
Let’s get started!
First, we create a new document (cmd+N or ctrl+N) in Adobe Illustrator with an artboard size of 800 x 600px
Now use Rectangle Tool (M) from the tool panel on the left of the artboard. You can click on the artboard and a panel will appear where you can specify the sizes. I usually go with abstractness and click and drag on the artboard.
Copy and paste the rectangle above it self. Leave some space in between. Then select the Direct Selection Tool (A) from the tool panel and select the bottom left vertex of the rectangle on top. Once the vertex is selected drag it below so that it perfectly aligns with left bottom vertex of the rectangle below. Please refer to images below.
Repeat this step with the left top vertex of the rectangle on top. The rectangle should look slanted now for the design to complete.
To complete our design, just copy the slanted rectangle. Paste the new one below the original rectangle and align the right side of both the rectangles as shown below.
Now select the rectangle in middle and Click Right > Transform > Arrange > Bring to Front. This option will bring the rectangle above the two rectangles.
We’re now going to generate our color palette.
First select your colors for light and shadows. Draw circles with fills of the colors you’re going to use for the different parts of the design. I've picked shades of orange and worked with it.
Now you can use the colors and add them to the Swatch panel by selecting them and clicking on the New Color Group button.
Our design and the color palette are ready. Now select an object, then select the Gradient Tool (G) and add color to your design. Try to play with colors and have direction of the light and shadow. Try with lighter shades on the top and gradually shift to the darker tones. The gradient angle of each rectangle can be different to enhance the design.
Let’s add a dark background to the logo. Create a rectangle the size of the artboard with help of the rectangle tool. Fill the rectangle with a dark color, in this case black. Now select the rectangle and Click Right > Transform > Arrange > Send to Back. This option will send the dark rectangle behind so that the logo is visible.
Our basic gradient shape logo is complete! You can change the background color to change the look of your logo. I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial. If you do follow this tutorial and create your own logo, please post it in the comments so we can see your result. Thankyou fellow designers!
