In this tutorial we are going to talk about how can we create an interesting curved letter logo. We’ll use the letter C as our base and create curves and add gradient to enhance the design. Generally, gradients along with curves can make any logo little overbearing but when the combination of two is minimal they can work along beautifully. I used a hot pink color palette to bring vibrance and youth to the otherwise simple and plane design. You may find additional inspiration by searching on Vlemonn.
Let’s get started!
First, we create a new document (cmd+N or ctrl+N) in Adobe Illustrator with an artboard size of 800 x 600px
Now use Type Tool (T) to add Capital letter C. Use a round edged font. Then right click on the text and select the Create Outline option. This option converts text into an object.
Afterwards, use the Pen Tool (P) to create a curve line on the bottom letter C. Don’t worry about it being perfect, let them be flowy and natural. Please follow the curves as shown below.
Keep the path thickness at 16 pt and choose the round ended cap. These functions can be found on the stroke panel on the right side of the artboard.
Create three more curved lines as shown below. They should be overlapping and intersecting. Then select all the paths and go to Object > Path > Outline Stroke. What this will do is make convert your path into an object.
Now select your entire design and select the Shape Builder tool (Shift + M) to create different objects. Select the Shape Builder tool and then click and drag across the selected shapes to create one single object. Combine the curve with the letter as shown below.
Remember that your paths must be either aligned or overlapping for the Shape Builder tool to work.
Let’s complete the curve logo by adding one more curve in middle of the letter as shown below. The stroke thickness should not matter but the path should be intersecting the outline of the letter.
Then use the shape builder tool again and separate the two objects. Click on the upper object once and then you’ll have the letter divided in two objects.
We’re now going to generate our color palette.
First select your colors for light and shadows. Draw squares with fills of the colors you’re going to use for the different parts of the design. I have filled it with hot pink color and its dark tints.
Now you can use the colors and add them to the Swatch panel by selecting them and clicking on the New Color Group button.
Our design and the color palette are ready. Now select the upper object and fill it hot pink color. Then select the bottom object, and select the Gradient Tool (G) and add color to your design. Adjust it so that the darker tone lies just beneath the upper object giving it a look of shadow. Refer to the images below.
Our curved letter C logo is complete! You can use and color and its tint to match with your brand vision and image. I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial. If you do follow this tutorial and create your own logo, please post it in the comments so we can see your result. Thankyou fellow designers!
