In this tutorial we are going to talk about use of gradient in letter logo designing. With the use of rectangles and circles we will create a basic shape of the letter C. Then we’ll use this letter C as our base and create curves and add gradient to enhance the design. I decided to work with shades of blue and purple to incorporate in my sophisticated yet vibrant logo. You may find additional inspiration by searching on Vlemonn.
Let’s get started!
First, we create a new document (cmd+N or ctrl+N) in Adobe Illustrator with an artboard size of 800 x 600px
Now use Rounded Rectangle Tool to create two same sized rectangles with rounded edges on your artboard. Place these rectangles one above the other style as shown below. The size should be same so I would recommend that you create one and then copy and paste it below.
Use the Ellipse Tool (L) from the tool panel on right, and create a circle. Press shift on your artboard to create a perfect round circle and then place it along the lines of the rectangles such that the rectangles are encircled.
Then create a smaller circle and place in between the two rectangles and create another circle and place it on the top rectangle and align it with the smaller circle. Please refer to images below to better understand this step.
Now select your entire design and select the Shape Builder tool (Shift + M) to create different objects.
Select the Shape Builder tool and then click and drag across the selected shapes to create one single object. Create different objects as shown below. I have created two different objects and deleted the rest.
Remember that your paths must be either aligned or overlapping for the Shape Builder tool to work.
After this step I felt that the letter looked a little spread out and squashed. That’s why I used the Direct Selection Tool (A) from the tool panel and selected the for vertex on the right side of the letter and drag them inside. Doing this step is up to you. I just felt the need to decrease the length of the rectangles in this particular shape.
We’re now going to generate our color palette.
First select your colors for light and shadows. Draw squares with fills of the colors you’re going to use for the different parts of the design. And afterwards, you can add them colors to the Swatch panel by selecting them and clicking on the New Color Group button.
Our design and the color palette are ready. Now select an object, then select the Gradient Tool (G) and add color to your design. Try to play with colors and have direction of the light and shadow. Try with darker shades on the top and gradually shift to the lighter tones.
I stuck with purple and lighter tones on the upper object, while I worked with tones of blue for the bottom object. I adjusted the angles and placement of colors until I was satisfied.
Our gradient logo is complete! I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial. Gradient logo is very easy to make once you get a hang of it thus, I use them very often for my designing. If you do follow this tutorial and create your own logo, please post it in the comments so we can see your result. Thankyou fellow designers!
