In this tutorial we are going to talk about use of gradient and geometric shapes in letter logo designing. We’ll create a simple leaf as our base and create curves and add gradient to enhance the design and give an impression of the letter F. Generally, working with geometric shapes can be difficult, but breaking the shape into basics will make it a lot easier.
To start with, we need a basic idea of what we are working for and what we want to create. Here, I wanted a logo for a brand FLORA. They wanted a fresh and bright logo for the brand along with a few variations in the color palette. So, by creating a basic leaf pattern and converting it into the letter of their brand was a well-planned decision. The green color scheme brings freshness and modern feel to it. Let’s get started
First, we create a new document (cmd+N or ctrl+N) in Adobe Illustrator with an artboard size of 800 x 600px
Now use Pen Tool (P) create a single straight line on the artboard. Let the stroke weight be 1 px. Then select the line and copy and paste it on right side with a little space in between.
Use the Ellipse Tool (L) from the tool panel and create a circle. Press hold Shift and a circle will be drafted. Align this circle with the left line segment.
Just copy and paste the circle you just created. Rescale this new circle to make it slightly smaller and align this one to the right line segment, as shown below. You may notice that we have completed the leaf shape with the help from two circles and two lines
You need to repeat the previous steps and add a line and two more circles to the design. These will help us in creating the shape of our letter. The line you paste will be placed between the two lines. The remaining circles should be aligned to this line as shown below.
Now select the shapes created in the previous step and make them unseen. To do this go to the layer panel on the bottom right corner and click the eye button. Once your eye is removed the shapes will become hidden.
Now select the remaining design and select the Shape Builder tool (Shift + M) to create different objects. Remember that your paths must be either aligned or overlapping for the Shape Builder tool to work.
Select the Shape Builder tool and then click and drag across the selected shapes to create one single object. Create different objects as shown below. Delete the remaining unused shaped.
Unhide the three shapes we hid in step 6. Then just repeat the previous step and use the shape builder tool to create two curves in the leaf shape as shown below.
We’re now going to generate our color palette. Draw squares with fills of the colours you’re going to use for the different parts of the design. Now add them to the Swatch panel by selecting them and clicking on the New Color Group button.
Our design and the color palette are ready. Now select an object, then select the Gradient Tool (G) and add color to your design. Try to play with colors and have direction of the light and shadow. Try with lighter shades on the top and gradually shift to the darker tones for the top curve and you fill the bottom two, the gradient changes. For the bottom two the gradient should go from dark to light.
Our gradient logo is complete! I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial. If you do follow this tutorial and create your own gradient logo, please post it in the comments so we can see your result. Thankyou fellow designers!
