In this tutorial we are going to talk about use of gradient in letter logo designing. We’ll use the letter S as our base and create curves and add gradient to enhance the design. The green and blue gradient is quite bold and vibrant adding depth to the otherwise simple logo. You may find additional inspiration by searching on Vlemonn.
Let’s get started!
First, we create a new document (cmd+N or ctrl+N) in Adobe Illustrator with an artboard size of 800 x 600px
Now use Type Tool (T) to add Capital letter S. Use a round edged font. Then right click on the text and select the Create Outline option. This option converts text into an object.
Use the Swap Fill and Stroke (Shift X) this function converts the black fill into a stroke. Afterwards, use the Pen Tool (P) to create four curve lines on the letter R. Don’t worry about them being perfect, let them be flowy and natural.
Now select your entire design and select the Shape Builder tool (Shift + M) to create different objects. Select the Shape Builder tool and then click and create different objects as shown below.
Remember that your paths must be either aligned or overlapping for the Shape Builder tool to work.
We’re now going to generate our color palette.
First select your colors for light and shadows. Draw squares with fills of the colors you’re going to use for the different parts of the design.
Now to create our entire color palette, we will use the Edit Colors. First click on the light color and then on the darker color and have four more boxes between them selected.
Then go to Edit > Edit Colors > Blend Horizontally. Now you can use the colors and add them to the Swatch panel by selecting them and clicking on the New Color Group button.
Our design and the color palette are ready. Now select an object, then select the Gradient Tool (G) and add color to your design. Try to play with colors and have direction of the light and shadow. Try with lighter shades on the top and gradually shift to the darker tones.
Our letter gradient logo is complete! I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial. If you do follow this tutorial and create your own logo, please post it in the comments so we can see your result. Thankyou fellow designers!
