In this tutorial we are going to talk about how can one use a pen tool and squares and create a minimal logo. We’ll use the single square as our base and create triangles using the pen tool. Afterwards we’ll add a complicated four color gradient to the design to make it look more dimensional and a logo which has depth. You may find additional inspiration by searching on Vlemonn.
Let’s get started!
First, we create a new document (cmd+N or ctrl+N) in Adobe Illustrator with an artboard size of 800 x 600px
Now use Rectangle Tool (M) to create a square on the centre of the artboard. Once you select the rectangle from tool panel click and drag on the artboard while pressing Shift on your keyboard.
Select the square and Click Right > Transform > Rotate > 45 degree. This option will rotate the square and convert it into a diamond.
Use the Pen Tool (P) to create a triangle on the corner of the square as shown below. You need to create two triangles which have one vertex that instructs. Don’t worry about them being perfect, let them be as natural as you want.
Now select the two triangles and Click Right > Transform > Rotate > 180 degree. Align the new two triangles as shown below.
Then select the two new triangles and a square and increase the size to 8 pt.
Now select the stroke panel and select the round option in cap and corner options. Increase the stroke of the remaining two triangles to 3 pt.
Select the entire design and go to Objects > Path > Outline Stroke. This option will convert the strokes into objects. We’re now going to convert the logo into one single compound path. Select the entire design and go to Object > Compound Path > Make.
Now we will add gradient to complete our logo. Just pick four to five colors you want. I went with shades and tints of blue. Then selected our logo object and added gradient to from the right panel of the artboard. Adjust the ratio of the gradient as shown below.
Our gradient logo made with pen tool is complete! It is a very simple and easy style of logo which you can incorporate in any basic shape you want. I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial. If you do follow this tutorial and create your own logo, please post it in the comments so we can see your result. Thankyou fellow designers!
