How to Create a Overlapping Letter Logo

How to Create a Overlapping Letter Logo

Overlapping is the new design trend which is going to last for some time. Designers are using colorful and bright overlapping styles to bring their designs to life. In this tutorial we are going to talk about use of transparency in letter logo designing. We’ll use the rectangles as our base and create letter F out of it and add color and transparency to enhance the design. I’ll try to make it easy so that you may understand the basics of overlapping logos. You may find additional inspiration by searching on Vlemonn.

Let’s get started!

Step 1

First, we create a new document (cmd+N or ctrl+N) in Adobe Illustrator with an artboard size of 800 x 600px

Step 2

Now use Rectangle Tool (M) and create a horizontal rectangle on your artboard. Copy and paste this rectangle below the original one.

Then select the bottom rectangle and Click Right > Rotate > 90 degree > Copy. Align this new vertical rectangle to the left side of the bottom rectangle as shown below.

Step 3

Just select the vertical rectangle on the left and decrease its size as shown below. Select the bottom vertex and drag it upwards, this will shorten the length of the rectangle. Then simply copy and paste the bottom horizontal above itself. This means you should have four rectangles on the artboard by now.

Then create a small rectangle between the two large horizontal rectangles as shown below.

Step 4

Now select your entire design and select the Shape Builder tool (Shift + M) to create different objects. Select the Shape Builder tool and then click and drag across the selected shapes to create one single object. Create different objects as shown below.

Combine the three horizontal rectangles first and then combine the vertical and bottom horizontal rectangle.

Step 5

Select the Direct Selection Tool (A) from the tool panel and select the bottom object. Then specifically select the two vertexes that I have selected below and drag them inside to create curves on the corners.

Step 6

Repeat the previous step and create more curves on the top object as shown below. We’ll need four curves, the two will be same as the last step and one will the bigger on the bottom left vertex and one will a small curve in middle.

Step 7

We’re now going to generate our color palette.
Draw squares with fills of the colors you’re going to use for the different parts of the design. I've picked two main colors, turquoise and green. Add then add them to the Swatch panel by selecting them and clicking on the New Color Group button.

Step 8

Our design and the color palette are ready. Now select an object, fill them with color you want. I filled the top object with green and the bottom one with turquoise.

Now select objects and go to the opacity panel on the centre top of our artboard and decrease its opacity to 80%.
