In this tutorial we are going to talk about use of gradient and typography in logo designing. We’ll create a seashell pattern with a gradient effect that makes it look like its merging with background as it ends and add the logo typography to enhance the design.
Minimal and subtle is this logos language. The spiral curve shapes and the font add to the flowing design. The color scheme is also very clam and soft. For other gradient logos, you may find additional inspiration by searching on Vlemonn!
Let’s get started
First, we create a new document (cmd+N or ctrl+N) in Adobe Illustrator with an artboard size of 800 x 600px
For creating a spiral, you’ll need look into the Line Segment tool. There you’ll find the Spiral Tool. With the help of this tool, create a spiral on the artboard.
Now select the spiral and copy (cmd+C or ctrl+C) and then paste it (cmd+V or ctrl+V). Use the Scale tool (S) to decrease the size of the spiral and align it to the first spiral as shown below.
Now select the two spirals and resize them using the Scale Tool (S) from the tool panel. Use the rotate to rotate them at a right angle. Select the objects > Right Click > Transform > Rotate.
Select the Pen Tool (P) from tool panel and create a curve pattern as shown below. This pattern only required three simple curves to complete.
With the same selected pattern and just copy and paste it on the artboard. Now using your mouse rotate the object just little and adjust it between the two spirals. To rotate with mouse, keep your cursor close to the end point of the object and a small curve arrow will appear. Select the arrow with selected move your mouse to rotate the object.
Now is the time-consuming part of repeating this process until you reach near the centre. As you can see, I started off with middle of the spiral as I did not want it to be a continuous overlapping thing.
Just repeat the step 6 and continue until you feel like it’s enough.
Once you feel like the patterns are enough you may proceed by deleting the two spirals by selecting them and pressing Backspace or Delete on your keyboards.
Our seashell pattern is almost complete. Now we’re going to generate our color palette.
Draw squares with fills of the colors you’re going to use for the different parts of the design. Try to use shades of a single color, start with the darkest shade and end on the lightest. I used shades and tints of green color as it’s a very soothing and calm color.
Now you can use the colors and add them to the Swatch panel by selecting them and clicking on the New Color Group button.
Our design and the color palette are ready. Now select pattern object on the bottom, then select the darkest shade of the color. Select another object a little further than the first one, leaving a few objects in between them and fill it with the shade next to the darkest one. Now select all the objects in between as well as the darkest and lighter object fills. Then go to Edit > Edit Colors > Blend Horizontally and see the magic.
While filling the second set of objects with colors remember to choose edit vertically instead of horizontally.
Repeat this process two more times until you reach the end.
We have reached the final step to add the typography in the centre. Use the Type Tool (T) and type Seashells. Change the font type to Shink. Then you want to select the text and click right and an option of create outlines appear. Hit that option and the text will convert into an object which may rescale now as you want.
Our seashell gradient logo is complete! I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial. If you do follow this tutorial and create your own logo, please post it in the comments so we can see your result. Thankyou fellow designers!
