How to Create a Simple Overlay Logo

How to Create a Simple Overlay Logo

One of the new trends might be the use of overlaying in a design. Overlay logo showcases the vibrant amalgamation of colors. This look is usually achieved by use of blend tool or transparency. I have worked with shades of green to achieve this look. The logo is made with using triangles, which are the only element in the design. Triangles are a symbol of strength and spirituality and along with the green color palette, the logo gives off a very professional yet peaceful vibe. Let’s get started!

Step 1

First, we create a new document (cmd+N or ctrl+N) in Adobe Illustrator with an artboard size of 800 x 600px

Step 2

Now use Polygon Tool from the tool panel on the left side of your artboard. To create a triangle, a polygon tool panel will appear on the screen when you have selected the tool and clicked on the screen once. Set the sides to 3 and the size to 50 px. Then press okay and a perfect equal sided triangle will be created on the artboard.

Step 3

Now simply copy and paste the last triangle. Place the new triangle next to the existing one, the ends should align as shown below.

Step 4

Make another triangle but the size should be bigger than the previous ones. Place this triangle between the two triangles as shown below.

Copy and paste the circle and decrease its size with the help of Scale Tool (S) and place this one on the centre of the previous one.

Step 5

You just need to copy and paste the triangle in middle. Place the new triangle next to the existing one, and then go ahead and paste another triangle on the opposite of the previous one as shown below.

Step 6

Let’s work with our color palette.
Draw squares with fills of the colors you’re going to use for the different parts of the design. I have decided to stick green color and work with its tints and shades. You can choose any two colors that are contrasting will create an interesting impact.

Now to use the colors and add them to the Swatch panel by selecting them and clicking on the New Color Group button.

Step 7

Our design and the color palette are ready. All we need to do is fill the objects with the colors as shown below. Fill the middle triangle with a light shade of green.

Then select the two big sized triangles on either side of the middle triangle, fill them with two different green shades and decrease the opacity to 80%. You’ll find the opacity panel on top of the artboard.

Fill the last two triangles with darker green shades and decrease their opacity to 60%.

Step 8

In this step, you may go ahead and add font and typography of your brand. I have worked with a minimal modern font to keep the typography from getting too loud and distracting. When you have taglines or subtitles, just to make your company name stand out, keep the text bold.
