How to Create a Text Mask Logo

How to Create a Text Mask Logo

Creating a text mask logo is very easy and efficient process. All you need is some text and an image and, when you select both objects, a single click creates the mask and the image shows through the text. In this tutorial we are going to see the process of clip masking. We’ll also add dark background and a little bit of drop shadow in the design and create depth in logo. You may find additional inspiration by searching on Vlemonn.

Let’s start masking!

Step 1

First, we create a new document (cmd+N or ctrl+N) in Adobe Illustrator with an artboard size of 800 x 600px

Step 2

Now use Type Tool (T) to add prop shop in all caps. Use a lemon milk bold font. Then right click on the text and select the Create Outline option. This option converts text into an object.

Step 3

Now that the text is converted into a vector, ungroup the text by selecting the text > Click Right > Ungroup.

Then only select the ‘SHOP’ letters and drag them to left side as shown below.

Step 4

Click on the O on your artboard, double click and select the centre and hit delete on your keyboard. Only a single circle will be now. Do this step to the remaining letters which have a vacant space in between like the letter P and R.

Step 5

Lets just complete the text design by using the Pen Tool (P) and creating an object on letter S so that the two ends are connected through a straight line. Please refer to images below to understand what I’m trying to explain.

Now select letter S and the object we just created and select the Shape Builder tool (Shift + M) to create a single sharp-edged S. Select the Shape Builder tool and then click and drag across the selected shapes to create one single object.

Step 6

We’re now going to convert our text into a compound path. First select the text and create a group (cmd+G or ctrl+G).

Select the text then go to Object > Compound Path > Make.

Step 7

Now to use the Ellipse Tool (L) from the tool panel and create a circle while pressing Shift on your keyboard. The circle should be the size of the Letter O. Copy and paste the circle on another letter O.

You have two circles now, select them and go to Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow. A drop shadow panel will appear, Keep the X offset at 8 px, the y offset at 15 px, blur at 10 px and select a dark grey color. Then hit okay and shadows will appear.

Select the two circles and send them back by Click Right > Arrange > Send to back.

Step 8

This is the easiest and the most important step. Bring an image you would like to mask. I got mine on a quick search on google but you may use your own photos. Place this image behind the text.

Select the text and the image then go to Object > Clipping Mask > Make. And there you have it. If you want you may add a dark colored background like I did or you can keep it plane white as well.

Conclusion

You are now an expert on clip masking tool of illustrator. I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial. Play around with different images, typography and shadows to create something new and different.
