In this tutorial we are going to learn how to create a minimal triangle logo with shadow. We’ll use a simple triangle as our base and create shapes to complete our design. I applied a dark blue color to the logo to add sophistication, seriousness and boldness. This intricating design can be used for a tech frim or a masculine brand. Let’s get started!
First, we create a new document (cmd+N or ctrl+N) in Adobe Illustrator with an artboard size of 800 x 600px
To create a triangle, select the Polygon Tool from the tool panel. Then, click once on the artboard where you want the shape to appear. A dialogue box will appear asking what radius you want the shape to be and how many sides you want it to have. You can’t go lower than 3, so enter 3 sides with a 50 px radius and click OK.
Once the triangle appears on the screen, select it and Click Right on your mouse. The option panel will appear, and then select Transform > Rotate > 270 degree. This option will rotate the triangle as shown below.
Use the Direct Selection Tool (A) and select vertex on the triangle and drag it on the inside. This will provide triangle with rounded corners.
Now just copy and paste this triangle. Place the new triangles as shown below. It may seem a little complicated but to simplify, our original triangle is the bold black stroke one and the remaining colored ones will help us create the required shape.
Now select your entire design and select the Shape Builder tool (Shift + M) to create our shape. Select the Shape Builder tool from the tool panel and then click and drag across the selected shapes to create one single object. Use the directions shown below.
Always remember that your paths must be either aligned or overlapping for the Shape Builder tool to work.
The inner shape looks a little too sharp. To soften it, we will use the Direct Selection Tool and drag it to give a rounded edge. Double select the vertex in middle and drag it inside the shape as shown below.
Let’s complete our design by copying and rotating the shape. Select the shape, Click Right > Transform > Rotate. Then a rotate panel will appear on your screen. Set the angle at -120 and hit Copy to create it’s copy. Place this shape in accordance to the previous one.
Repeat this step one more time and complete the deign. This time select the newly created shape and rotate it and copy and place it. You may then delete the base triangle we created in the starting.
We’re now going to generate our color palette.
First select your colors for light and shadows. Draw squares with fills of the colors you’re going to use and then add them to the Swatch panel by selecting them and clicking on the New Color Group button.
Fill in a solid color and then select your entire design and then go to Effect > Stylize > Inner Glow. An Inner Glow panel will appear. Change the settings including the color, mode and blur. Change color to dark blue, Mode to Soft Light and Blur to 10 px. Then hit okay.
Our triangle logo is complete! I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial. If you do follow this tutorial and create your own logo, please post it in the comments so we can see your result. Thankyou fellow designers!
