In this tutorial we are going to talk about how we can use art brush to create interesting logo designs. The brush tool in illustrator is very useful for making intricate and detailed logo design without a lot hassle. You may find additional inspiration by searching on Vlemonn.
Let’s get started!
First, we create a new document (cmd+N or ctrl+N) in Adobe Illustrator with an artboard size of 800 x 600px
Now use the Pen Tool (P) to create a single line. Increase the line weight from the top panel to 5. Then to add curved edges, go to the stroke panel on your right and select the round cap option.
Repeat the previous step and create another straight near the first one but a little shorter.
Keep using the pen tool and creating lines as shown below.
Now select all the lines you just drafted and go to Object > Expand. This option will convert the strokes into fills.
With the lines selected copy them (cmd+C or ctrl+C) and paste them (cmd+V or ctrl+V) next to each other. Paste them at least four times.
On the end of the lines create a rectangle. Use the Shape Builder tool (Shift + M) and combine the end lines with the rectangle as shown below.
Select the Direct selection tool (A) from the tool panel and end anchor points of the object and drag the points inside the rectangle to create a rounded corner.
Similarly repeat the process for the small white rectangles on the left side. Try to stretch out the rectangles at different lengths and then add curves.
Now that the right is ready. Repeat this entire process on the left end of the design. Create a rectangle, use the shape builder tool and then use the direct selection tool to add curves and rounded edges.
Once you are satisfied with your pattern, select the entire thing and make a group (cmd+G or ctrl+G). Then go to the brush panel on the left side of the artboard and drag your pattern to the brush panel. An option box will appear where you have to select The Art Brush option.
After that another Art Brush option panel will appear and then you have to select Scale Proportionally.
Now that our art brush is ready, we need to create our letter. For creating the Letter J, use the Ellipse Tool (L) from the tool panel and create a circle holding shift. Then select the Direct Selection Tool (A) and select the two anchor points on each side of the circle and then hit the scissor option that appears on the top of your artboard.
Now delete the separated upper half of the circle by selecting the path and deleting it.
Then create a straight line from the left anchor point to complete our Letter J.
With our J selected go to the brush panel and select the new brush we created. The pattern will be applied onto the Letter.
Then just go to the Option panel on top and hit the Expand Appearance option and your stroke will be converted into an object.
Create your color palette and select the circles to create a color group. Add them to the Swatch panel by selecting them and clicking on the New Color Group button.
Lastly use the Rectangle Tool (M) from tool panel and create a rectangle the size of our artboard. Add gradient to it with the help of the gradient tool on your left. Send it backwards by Click Right > Arrange > Send Back.
Now select the J and add the lightest grey color.
Finally, our Art Brush Letter Logo is complete! I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial. If you do follow this tutorial and create your own logo, please post it in the comments so we can see your result. Thankyou fellow designers!
