Windows 10 Upgrade Icon is not Available on Taskbar

Microsoft Windows 10 is officially available after 29 July 2015 and i exited to use the same in my machine. I created this article to troubleshoot the issue if your are not able to see the Windows 10 upgrade icone on the taskbar.

Before Starting the trobleshooting insure the below requirement is mate

  1. Genuine Windows: If your are running a  genuine windows 7 or Windows 8 ignore this requirement. If your windows is not genuine then get w genuine copy of windows 10
  2. Windows Edition: Ensure you are not running Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1. This edition of windows is not a part of Windows 10 upgrade.
  3. School or Business Network: If your system is manage as a part of school or business network your are not able to install windows 10 upgrade.
  4. Compitability: Your device is compitable with Windows 10.

If your device mate above requirement then you can try below solution to reserve your windows 10 upgrade.

  • Solution 1 Windows Update: It is possible that your OS is not having require updates. For this you need to enable windows update and then once you got the proper updates you are able to see the windows10 upgrade icon in your taskbar.
    • Following updates are required to get windows 10 upgrade icon in taskbar
      • Windows 7: Windows 7 SP1, KB3035583,KB2952664
      • Windows 8.1: KB3035583, KB2976978

Note: You can manually check whether this update is available in your machine by executing below command prompt command. (Replace the number with the number netioned above without KB)

dism /online /get-packages | findstr 3035583

If you think your OS have required updates then try solution 2

  • Solution 2 : Follow below instructions

1. Open Notepad

2. Past below code in notepad

REG QUERY "HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionAppCompatFlagsUpgradeExperienceIndicators" /v UpgEx | findstr UpgEx

if "%errorlevel%" == "0" GOTO RunGWX

schtasks /run /TN "MicrosoftWindowsApplication ExperienceMicrosoft Compatibility Appraiser"


schtasks /query /TN "MicrosoftWindowsApplication ExperienceMicrosoft Compatibility Appraiser"

schtasks /query /TN "MicrosoftWindowsApplication ExperienceMicrosoft Compatibility Appraiser" | findstr Ready

if NOT "%errorlevel%" == "0" ping localhost >nul &goto :CompatCheckRunning


schtasks /run /TN "MicrosoftWindowsSetupgwxrefreshgwxconfig"

3. Click on File > Save As , In the filename box type ReserveWin10.cmd.

4. From the sav as type drop down select Allfiles (*.*) 

5. Finally click on Save.

6. Open command promt as an administrator and execute ReserveWin10.cmd

Note: This will taske some time to execute may be 10 - 30 mins. Before executing this ensure you have required updates. If you don't have infinte updates this utility is going to stuck in infinte loops.
