In this article, we will learn How to use Data Player in IBM Cognos Analytics. Following is the demo video which will demonstrate what we will cover.
Data Player is one of the new features added in IBM Cognos Analytics. It is used to change filter automatically with time. We can use it to compare data between different filters. As we mentioned filter will automatically change with time. The change in filters is very fast. If the queries used by the data player are slow in execution, then we can’t use it.
To create our sample dashboard with a Data Player, we need to use the following sample data file.
|Sample Sales Data||Login to Download|
In the above file, we have sales data for different regions. Download the sample data file and upload it to IBM Cognos Analytics. Once the file is uploaded successfully, we will use it to Create a new Dashboard.
Next, we need to create a new Dashboard. Click on the plus sign at bottom most left corner and select Dashboard. On Select template page, select the tabbed collection and select the appropriate template. Finally, click on the “Ok” button to create your new dashboard.
For the visualization, we will use our sample file. If you want to use any other file, feel free to use. Once the dashboard is created, add your uploaded Excel file as a data source.
Next, we will add some visualizations. Select the Visualization. From the visualization select map. For map adds state and the Sale. After this, resize the map as per your requirement. Finally, add a few more visualizations. Following is our sample dashboard.
We are ready to use a Data Player. To add the data player, select the visualization. From the visualizations, add the Data Player.
Data Player Labels are visible to the end user. For the data player labels, we are using “Region” column.
After, this we will sort the labels based on the Sale for each region. We will sort it from highest sale to lowest sale. To arrange the label, click on the ellipse button. In the new menu select the “Top or Bottom” option, it will open a new menu. In the “Top or Bottom” menu, we need to provide the following things.
Numbers of counts or records: We selected 100% Why? Please check the next setting
Criteria to select the count or records: After selecting the number of counts (N), we have an option to select a method to select N number of counts or records. For this, we have the following options
Top Count: Select top N counts or records. If the value of N is 2, then select only top 2 counts or records.
Top%: Select top N% counts or records. If the number of records is 10 and the value of N is 2, then select only top 2% counts or records. 2% of 10 is 2.
Bottom Count: Select N counts or records from the bottom. If the value of N is 2, then select only 2 counts or records from the bottom.
Bottom%: Select N% counts or records from the bottom. If the number of records is 10 and the value of N is 2, then select only 2% counts or records from the bottom. 2% of 10 is 2.
For our dashboard, we select Top 100% record.
After this select the column to use for ordering by we used sale column.
Once you are done with all the settings, close the data player edit dialog. We are done with our report. Next, we will test our reports.
We are ready to test. Click on the play button to play the data player. It will change the Region with time. If it is very fast, you can stop the player and manually select the regions
