Tableau Installation on Windows

Introduction

In this article, we will learn How to Download and Install Tableau Public Desktop on Windows Machine?

Tableau Installation Requirement

Tableau desktop is available for Windows and Mac.
Following are some requirement to install Tableau Desktop free edition

Operating System

You can install Tableau on Windows or later. For Mac users OSX 10.11 or later.

Web Browsers

  • Chrome for Windows, MAC and Android 4.4 or later. 
  • Internet Explorer 11 or Microsoft Edge only for Windows Users.
  • Mozilla Firefox or Firefox ESR on Windows and Mac.
  • Apple Safari on Mac and iOS 8.x or later

Data Source

If you are using the Tableau Public Desktop, then you are only able to use the following limited data sources.

  • Microsoft Excel
  • Text files, comma separated value (.csv) files
  • JSON files
  • PDF
  • Spatial files (ESRI Shapefiles, KML, GeoJSON, and MapInfo)
  • Statistical files; SAS (*.sas7bdat), SPSS (*.sav), and R (*.rdata, *.rda)
  • Odata
  • Google Sheets
  • Web Data Connectors

  • Disk Space: 1.5 GB

Download Tableau Public

To install tableau first we need to download it from Tableau.com. If you have the licensed for the Tableau’s product you can download and install it. We will use the free and trial version of Tableau desktop for this entire tutorial series. To download the free Tableau desktop visit @ https://public.tableau.com/en-us/s/download

Download Tableau Trial

At the time of writing this article, we downloaded the Tableau version 2018.2.2. The version for you may be newer.
You can download an older version for Tableau from https://www.tableau.com/support/releases

Tableau Installation

Tableau Installation is very simple. You need to launch the installation and need to accept the terms and condition. The rest of the things will be handled by the installation. In our previous step, we downloaded the installation file. Next, we need to double click on the installer to launch the installation.

Tableau Public Desktop Installation

Tableau Desktop Trial Installation

The installation step for both free and the trial is same. Except, for the trial you need to provide the registration information. Also, with the Tableau desktop trial, you can connect almost all the data sources.

Download Data Source Drivers

If you are using the Tableau Desktop, then you may need to connect with a database server. We will use SQL Server Database for our tutorial videos. To connect with a database server, we need to download its driver first. Following are the steps to download any specific database server drivers:

  • Visit Support Page: https://www.tableau.com/support
  • Click on Download Drivers available under Quick Links
  • Search for required Drivers
  • Download and Install the Drivers.

As shown in the image, for SQL Server drivers will install automatically. So why the above steps. Just to demonstrate How to download and install drivers for your database server.
