Configuration

In this article, we will learn How to configure IBM Cognos Framework manager?

To configure IBM Cognos 10 Framework Manager, we need to first launch IBM Cognos Configuration Manager. We have multiple options to launch it. If we have a start menu shortcut icon, we can use it to launch IBM Cognos Framework Manager. We or the admin team selected the start menu shortcut folder name at the time of IBM Cognos Framework Manager setup. If you don’t know the shortcut folder name you can either, ask it from the admin team or you can search it. Normally it is with the name “IBM Cognos”. For us, it is “IBM Cognos 10 FM”. Click on the start menu and then click on any letters to narrow down your search. Click on the letter “I” to check all its entries. Expand your FM shortcut folder. For us it is “

IBM Cognos 10 FM”. Under “IBM Cognos 10 FM” you can find all the installed components we need to click on the IBM Cognos Configuration shortcut icon to launch the IBM Cognos Configuration Manager.

If the shortcut folder is not visible to you then you can use explorer to launch the IBM Cognos Configuration. We are assuming it is installed. If it is installed, you need to open the installation directory. In our system, it is installed in “C:\ibm\cognos\c10”. Open it, here you can find a “bin” folder. Open the “bin” folder. Inside the “bin” folder you can find all the installed application. We are interested in cogconfigw.exe. Double click on the cogconfigw.exe to launch it. If the user account controller, ask for your permission click on the “Yes” button.

The following image shows the window for the IBM Cognos Configuration Manager.

The Configuration Manager is divided into two sections. On the left, we can find all the properties. Based on the selected properties we can find all the values in the right section. Here we need to select then select the “Environment”.

Select the “Environment”, then on the right side you can find the entries for the Gateway URI and the Dispatcher URI. You need to enter the correct Gateway and the Dispatcher URI to complete the configuration.

Next, we need to save the configuration. Before clicking on the “Save” button, we are assuming the following things

  1. The Gateway and the Dispatcher URI are correct.
  2. The Gateway and the Dispatcher URI are accessible from your system.
  3. IBM Cognos Web Server and the Application Server are up and running.

If any of the above points are not valid for you, then you can’t configure the IBM Cognos Framework Manager. Why?

Let us save our configuration with wrong URLs.

When you click on the save button, then the IBM Cognos configuration manager will generate the cryptographic information. If the configuration manager is not able to access the IBM Cognos server, then the cryptographic information will not be generated successfully. It means your configuration is not completely done.

Refer the following image for more details.

Update the correct Gateway and the Dispatcher URI and save the configuration. Following image shows when we have the correct configuration for the IBM Cognos Framework Manager.

How to check if the Gateway URI and the Dispatcher URI are correct?

It is one of the complex tasks ;-). You need to first open your favorite browser and then you need to visit both the URLs. If it is correct, you see a response in your browser.  If the Gateway and the Dispatcher URI are incorrect, then you will see the following error message. Error messages will differ based on the browser.
